Dublin North Central Garda Youth Awards 2018

The Garda Youth Awards celebrate outstanding young people between 13 and 21 years of age and recognise the good work being done by young people throughout the communities of Dublin North Central.

Awards will be considered for nominated young people who by their presence make their communities a better place to live.  There will also be an award for groups of two or more young people whose combined efforts have contributed positively to their communities.  The Dublin North Central Garda Division covers Mountjoy, Fitzgibbon Street, Bridewell and Strore Street Garda Stations.

 

2018 Awards​

Ten prestigious Garda Youth Awards were presented at the Dublin North Central Garda Youth Awards, in association with Croke Park which took place in November 2018 with over 200 especially invited guests in attendance. Our award winners for 2018 were:

D District Award Winner – the community area covered by the Bridewell Garda Station
U District Winner – the community area covered by Mountjoy Garda Station
Joint C District Winners – the community area covered by Store Street Garda Station & Dylan Grey
Special Achievement Award - Killian Kerin

D District Award Winner

Charley Boylan was nominated by the Residents Association in St. Michan’s House, in recognition of all the volunteering work she does in her local area. They describe Charley as someone who “will help and assist anyone at any time”.  The judging panel was very impressed with Charley’s work as a volunteer in her community and how she quietly goes about helping and enriching the lives of her neighbours; as well as recently branching out and helping street children overseas Morocco and the Dublin pilgrimage to Lourdes.

U District Winner

Nominated by Phibsboro Village Tidy Towns, Anne McKee is the youngest member of the Phibsboro Village Tidy Town committee – a local group of who give their time to ‘cleaning and greening’ their community area in Dublin 7. Praised for her kindness, positivity and commitment, the committee particularly noted how Anne’s enthusiasm has helped bridged the generation gap in her community and facilitated a sense of shared responsibility for the area across all ages. Through her commitment, Anne has showed that is possible to have both a social life and a social conscience and she is to be commended for her work in her community.

Joint C District Winner

Nominated by Garda Aoife Siggins from Store Street Garda Station, our first winner of the C District Award for 2018 has been involved with Belvedere local youth club for several years. The judging panel was particularly impressed on how Ross Rooney is making a positive contribution in his community, making it a better place to live. Noting his positive attitude, his determination to better himself, his quality of life and his community, Garda Siggins particularly noted his role as a positive role model for younger children in his area.

Joint C District Winner

Dylan Grey

Also nominated by Garda Aoife Siggins, our joint C District Award is going to 13-year-old Dylan Grey, who was nominated for the continuous dedication and commitment he has shown to improving the local area he lives in by being an important part of Lourdes Youth and Community Services.  In addition to being an active member of the youth club and participating in many different events and activities, Dylan also volunteers his time to help in the club and he is also praised for being so welcoming to new members to the club and encouraging their continued attendance

 

Special Achievement Award

Nominated by the local gardaí in Mountjoy Garda Station, who particularly noted Killian Kerin’s effort and commitment to his personal growth, the judging panel were particularly impressed how Killian’s effort and determination to build himself a bright and successful future, can inspire other young people in our area.

Special Achievement Award

Nominated by Paula Daly in Youthreach, our second special achievement award goes to Cameron Byrne, who was commended for her inner strength and commitment to her personal growth & wellbeing. The judging panel were particularly impressed how Cameron has immersed herself in her studies and has worked so hard to build relationships with others and is an inspiration to other young people in her area.

Special Achievement Award

Nominated by Bohemian FC, our third special achievement award is going to 18-year-old Neil Hoey.     When he was 11 years old, Neil was an ordinary young boy who not only received a shock cancer diagnosis but also learnt that to stop his cancer from spreading, he would need to have his leg amputated.  Facing down this diagnosis and a life-changing injury, Neil’s positive attitude and determination has seen him become the youngest member of Ireland’s national amputee soccer team and he has only just returned home from representing Ireland at the FIFA Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico.

Group Award Winner

Nominated by Garda Emma Roche from Mountjoy Garda Station, sisters Seraya & Ceyda O’Shaughnessy and Simina Cicea have made a very positive contribution to their community and made it a better place to live by the selfless care they show to animals in our local area.  On several occasions, Seraya, Ceyda and Simina have brought lost dogs into Fitzgibbon Street Garda Station in the hope that the dogs can either be reunited with their owners or re-homed with a new family. 

Hall of Fame Award Winner

Kellie Harrington

Kellie exploded into our lives at the World Boxing Championships in 2016 where she won silver at light welterweight and has now captured the Gold medal in New Delhi.  While boxing is an individual sport, Kellie is a team player and always takes the time to help, encourage and champion others.   Always approachable, willing to help with projects in our community, and recognising the contribution Kellie makes to the well-being of young people in Dublin’s north inner city, as well as the pride and joy she has brought to so many people in our community and across the country with her sporting success. Accepting the award on behalf of Kelly was her father, Christopher Harrington.
 

Overall winner

Stephen Doran
Nominated by the HAY Garda Youth Diversion Project, Stephen Doran has shown immense courage and inner strength to build a brighter future for himself, while at the same time becoming an inspiration and example to other young people in our area.  He has embraced change over the last number of years and his strength and commitment to his personal growth and wellbeing has seen build a new path in life.  Stephen has been selected by the Irish Youth Justice Service to speak on behalf of young people at their annual conference which is testament to the progress he has made and how he sets an example for other young people.  Now a mentor to his peers, he helps them to make positive life-choices and join in with positive social activities.
