Book Club Live at the GAA Museum for Bealtaine!

Epic Origins of Hurling Discussion – book your free tickets now for Wednesday May 7th

The GAA Museum Book Club is delighted to announce the return of our live events as part of the 2025 Bealtaine Festival.
This year the team behind our Book Club choice for March / April 2025 The Epic Origins of Hurling Ireland’s Ancient Sport will discuss their unique project.

This book is a little different from the usual choices in that it was originally published in the Irish language as Scéal na hIomána in 1980 by St Joseph’s Fairview teacher Br Liam Ó’Caithnia. He was conferred a PhD for the work and his love of hurling was widely known amongst his pupils.

This translated and abridged version was published in 2024 and was conceived as a fundraising initiative for the benefit of St Joseph’s Secondary and Primary schools. The project was led by Brendan McGrath. Brendan is a former pupil of Br Ó’Caithnia. Other past pupils involved in the editing and translating process include Micheál McGrath and Stephen McGrath.

For our Book Club Live event Brendan will discuss how the project evolved while Michael will talk about the translation journey and Stephen will deal with developing the style of the book and bringing all these disparate parts together to create one voice.

Book Club Live will take place at 10.30am on Wednesday May 7th. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance at www.crokepark.ie/gaamuseum. Complimentary tea and coffee will be served on arrival, and visitors can spend time in the GAA Museum before and after the lecture takes place. Places are limited, so please only book if you can attend.
