Sustainability at Croke Park

Environmental sustainability has been a central focus for the entire Croke Park team for over ten years.  Since 2014, 0% of the waste generated by the stadium goes to landfill and while waste, water and energy projects were the start of our sustainability journey, it has extended into areas such as biodiversity over the years.

Biodiversity – Sustaining our bugs and bees

Míde Ní Shúilleabháin, our sustainability officer, and the Croke Park operations team work with Wildlife Management Services on a range of biodiversity projects.  Our Bug Hotel has been open since 2015 offering a habitat within the Cusack Stand for insects and pollinators who can find it difficult to locate places to nest and hibernate in our urban area.

Since last year, we’ve been working with local beekeepers from Fingal Super Foods on introducing beehives at our farm in North County Dublin. Honey bees play a crucial role in the global eco-system to the point that one third of the food we consume each day relies on pollination by honey bees.  They have, however, become an endangered and threatened species, and we are conscious of the part we can play here.  Míde was thrilled to find that the bees had taken up residency on the farm recently and we look forward to having our very own honey on the menu for our Croke Park Meetings & Events delegates before too long.

Our Kitchen Garden

Also located on the farm is our polytunnel where our executive chef Ruairi Boyce is taking great pride in growing a range of herbs and vegetables including cauliflower, aubergines, courgettes and rosemary.  Croke Park recently collaborated with artisan cheese producer Bluebell Falls to produce a limited edition goats cheese flavoured with Croke Park farm-grown herbs.

Sustainable meetings and events are not a lofty aspiration or vacuous marketing piece for us at Croke Park Meetings & Events.  Projects like this, our Paperless Meetings, our Recycling and Recreating initiatives all help make sustainability a reality that is part of who we are and what we do.
