Transatlantic Connections Exhibition
The new GAA Museum exhibition explores the sporting connections between the GAA and the Americas. A particular focus is put on the travel aspect and how athletes kept fit on the long journeys across the Atlantic.
Within the exhibition the history of the GAA in The United States, Canada and Argentina are traced, along with Croke Park’s past American Football games going back to 1946 and the connection between GAA Rounders and Baseball.
Also featured is Muhammad Ali’s boxing match vs Al Lewis, held in Croke Park in 1972, the 1924 Croke Park Rodeo, The GAA’s 1888 invasion tour of the U.S, the 1947 All-Ireland Final held in New York and the Top Ace Handball competition.
Items on display include Muhammad Ali’s signed shorts and gloves, Martin Hennigan’s Top Ace Award, 1947 Kerry Jersey as worn by Bill Casey in the 1947 All-Ireland Senior Football, legendary commentator Mick Dunne’s scrapbooks from the GAA All-Star tours to the U.S & the Irish Echo trophy presented to Kerry for winning the world series of Gaelic Football in New York in 1937.
