Remembering Bloody Sunday Tours
The GAA Museum marks the 105th anniversary of Bloody Sunday with special commemorative guided tours at Croke Park on Friday, November 21st.
The most infamous event in the history of the GAA occurred on Sunday November 21st, 1920, when the War of Independence was raging in Ireland. A ‘great challenge’ football match took place between Tipperary and Dublin. Throw-in was at 3.15pm. With over 10,000 spectators gathered in Croke Park, British Auxiliary Forces were given orders to surround the stadium and block the exits. As the match continued, an armed convoy began shooting and moved inside the grounds. Rapid fire continued for about 90 seconds after which 13 people, including one player, lay dead and a further spectator died later in hospital.
