A new exhibition at the GAA Museum celebrates milestone anniversaries of the Associations as Gaelic Football, Hurling and Rounders turn 140 years old, Camogie 120, Handball 100, and LGFA 50.
A Year of Anniversaries: Foundations to Future Exhibition
The 2024/2025 temporary exhibition in the GAA Museum celebrates the anniversaries of Gaelic Football, Hurling, Handball, Rounders, Ladies Football & Camogie. It explores how each association was created and grew to where they are today. The role of volunteer is highlighted through the exhibition space and the vital role they play in Gaelic Games.
Within the Exhibition the history of each aooaction is traced:
GAA
The role of the volunteer, the upcoming integration and the history of the All-Ireland championships are all described in the panels.
Camogie
The history of the Camogie Association & the evolution of the game of camogie are represented as the rules and gear changed over the decades to reflect the increased skill level of the players.
LGFA
The rapid rise of the LGFA is described within its display panels. There is a focus on its partnership with TG4 and how both grew together hand in hand with record-breaking attendance figures and TV viewing numbers.
Handball
The history of Handball is explored and its origins in Ireland dating back to 1527 when it was first mentioned in the Town Statues of Galway. The panels look at the Handball boom of the 1960s as numbers of players and alleys grew and the creation of the Women's Handball Council in 1971.
Rounders
The history of Rounders dating back to 1744 is explored but the focus of the Rounders panels is on Peadar O’Tuatain who was the cornerstone of the growth of GAA Rounders from 1958.
Items on display include, The Silvermines Cup, the first reference of Gaelic Games outside of Ireland 1747, a 1904 Camogie uniform, the Football used in first LGFA All-Ireland Senior Final, Martin Hennigan’s Top Ace Award from 1984 and All-Ireland Mixed Rounders Championship Cup.
