2003 Special Olympics

A capacity crowd welcomed the athletes, their families along with over 31,000 volunteers, of all ages and backgrounds, to Croke Park on a night of celebration and unmatched atmosphere.

Our stadium provided the backdrop for spectacular opening & closing ceremonies for the games, an occasion which lives on memory as one of the truly great moments in Special Olympic, and our own history here in Croke Park.

"fewer things in life could have given me greater pleasure..."

- Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela travelled to Ireland to attend the Opening Ceremony and his statement, “fewer things in life could have given me greater pleasure or brought me more honour”, truly sums up the proud legacy, these particular games left for all concerned.
