American Invasion
12
In September 1888, the GAA sent 50 of its best athletes and hurlers on a fundraising tour of America, which became known as the Invasion Tour. Exhibition matches were held in several cities. Bad weather, a bitter dispute between America’s two main athletic bodies and a Presidential election all resulted in poor attendances. The GAA borrowed money from Michael Davitt to cover expenses and the return home.

At least 17 of the athletes settled permanently in America. Although a financial failure, the tour awakened interest in Gaelic games among Irish exiles.
