Greener Croke Park

How is Croke Park working towards being a Greener Stadium?

Croke Park Stadium: home of Gaelic Games & mecca to GAA fans across the world, welcomes over 1.5 million visitors each year & is proud of its long-established green credentials.  Having already become the first stadium in Ireland & the UK to secure both ISO14001 and ISO 20121 standards in 2012, Croke Park is an acknowledged trail blazer when it comes to aspiring to and achieving the highest levels of sustainability excellence in Ireland

  • 0% of over 700 tonnes of waste generated annaully goes to landfill
  • A decrease in stadium gas consumption with the introduction of the first integrated pitch control system in Europe
  • Biodiverity with Croke Park Bug Bee &Bee

The education of visitors and spectators in the correct recycling behaviour when working or attending events in the Stadium was crucial. Communications with patrons through direct signage within the stadium & by clearly labelling the three right bin system, an eye-catching poster campaign over the course of the season highlighted the sustainability achievements reached. These communication channels are used to engage with visitors to generate awareness about the stadium’s sustainability commitments and secure their support. The stadium developed its Green Ambassadors initiative in 2014 which is done in tandem with a local primary school in the Croke Park area that has secured a “Green Flag” for its own sustainability initiatives. Partnering with young people who have a strong knowledge and understanding of the importance of recycling and best environmental practices that many grown-ups are not aware of has proven to be a highly effective way of communicating the stadium’s sustainability initiatives to event day patrons.

Croke Park’s ‘Environmental & Sustainability Management Group’ is the GAA version of “The Avengers’. They’re a group of 15 stadium staff and contractors with diverse skills and vastly different job roles & responsibilities who come together to achieve Croke Park’s lofty sustainability goals & thereby help save the planet (just like the Avengers!). While none of Croke Park’s environmental & sustainability superheroes don capes or iron suits, as they go about reaching the stadium’s sustainability’s objectives, they are the driving force behind all sustainability achievements made by Croke Park Stadium.

On the back of Croke Parks success in winning the award for Sustainability Team of the year at the 2015 Green Awards, The Safety and Security Award at the Stadium Business Awards 2015 and the Green Facilities Management and Overall Excellence in Facilities Management at the 2015 Facilities Management Awards Croke Park Stadium hosted a Sustainability Awareness Days for patrons attending the All Ireland Hurling Semi Finals. The objective of the day was to make all patrons aware of the lengths that the stadium goes to, to reduce our environmental impact and how we encourage spectators to work with us in achieving our goals.
