Dublin Festival of History with Dr. James Curry
Part of the Dublin Festival of History, this talk delivered by Dr James Curry on 5th October 6.30pm - 8.30pm, will examine the careers of two legendary players in the history of Shelbourne Football Club: Val Harris and Tony Sheridan.
A versatile performer who starred for Everton FC and the Ireland senior international team prior to the outbreak of the First World War, Val Harris returned to Shelbourne in 1914 and re-established himself as one of the club’s greatest players during that era. Following his retirement, Harris - who as a youngster won an All-Ireland GAA medal with Dublin - became manager of Shels and in 1939 led the club to their first ever FAI Cup win.
On the eve of the club’s centenary season, Tony Sheridan joined Shelbourne FC in August 1995 and by the end of the campaign had become a Tolka Park icon after helping Shels win the FAI Cup for a fifth time. A stylish attacking midfielder who scored some famous goals during that 1996 cup run, “Shero” had previously played in the Premiership for Coventry City and was regularly selected for Ireland from Under 15’s to Under 21’s level.
Tickets are free but must be booked online in advance. Complimentary tea or coffee is included with each ticket as well as free entry to the GAA Museum where you can trace the birth and growth of Gaelic games from ancient times to the present day.
