25th November 2013
Celebrations are taking place at Croke Park to mark the stadium achieving its goal of becoming the first stadium in Europe to achieve OHSAS 18001 Certification; the globally recognised standard for best practice in occupational health and safety.
Croke Park, Dublin’s largest visitor attraction with over 1.5 million visitors in 2013, was awarded the certification after an extensive audit process which ensured the stadium’s health and safety management system complies with the highest international specifications. The audit was carried out by SGS Ireland.
It included a live match day audit which was completed successfully during the All-Ireland Football Final on Sunday, September 22nd and a walk through audit of the stadium in early November during two of the biggest commercial events hosted by Croke Park in 2013.
These assessed the health and safety management system in place at the stadium which are applicable to all employees and contractors’ operating within Croke Park. In addition to GAA games and concerts, the audit scope includes all commercial events such as conferences and receptions hosted in Croke Park as well as the day to day support systems and services including the GAA Museum and Etihad Skyline Tours, pitch maintenance and the security of the stadium complex.
Alan Gallagher, Head of Stadium Operations at Croke Park expressed his delight at achieving OHSAS 18001 certification:
“Immense credit is due to the hard work of our safety team here in the stadium, our staff and our contactors, who have achieved today’s result for Croke Park. Our core message is ‘to make safety our goal’ as the health and safety of our employees and the one and a half million visitors to our stadium is always our number one priority”
Speaking at the announcement, Peter McKenna, Stadium & Commercial Director said:
“Today we mark a very special achievement as Croke Park becomes the first stadium in Europe to achieve this international health and safety standard. Securing OHSAS 18001 certification follows on from last year’s success when Croke Park became one of the first sports stadiums in the world to receive ISO 20121 certification, the International Standard for Event Sustainability Management Systems.”
