Context

Biographical history

A meeting was held between the representatives of the GAA and the Universities on the 5th of January 1968; at this meeting it was agreed to establish a Universities Council (Comhairle na nOllscoil) to ‘promote and develop Gaelic games within the University structure…provide adequate competitive games for all University students…draw up bye-laws to govern whatever competitions it deems fit to establish…manage and control all competitions under its jurisdiction, in accordance with the general rules of the Gaelic Athletic Association’. The draft constitution of the proposed Universities Council recommended that the institutions represented be confined to Queens University Belfast, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork and University College Galway and that each College have three members on the Council, with the Central Council nominating two members. It was also agreed that the Universities Council would have one representative on the Central Council and that the business of the Universities Council be conducted through Irish. These recommendations were approved of by the Central Council, at their 20th of January 1968 meeting (with the exception of the recommendation that the Universities Council have one representative on the Central Council, which was agreed to at the 1968 Annual Congress)

The Universities Council met for the first time on the 25th of May 1968 with Pádraig Mac Diarmada (University College Galway) elected as its first Chairman.
